Blc. Sanyung Ruby Grand Dragon’ is a powerful Cattleya hybrid that impresses with its rich, deep red flowers and glossy texture. This Brassolaeliocattleya hybrid was developed in Taiwan, where breeders focus on expressive colors and sturdy blooms. The clone ‘Grand Dragon’ was selected for its full flower shape and its remarkably deep color tone, which looks almost black-red under certain light. It is favored in collections focused on strong colors within the Cattleya alliance.
The plant grows sympodially with stout pseudobulbs and leathery, slightly upright leaves. Mature shoots often produce one to three large flowers of about 13-15 cm diameter. The petals are intense burgundy with an almost velvety sheen. The lip is extra wide and darkly colored, sometimes with subtle shades of purple or black-red at the center. The flowers are lightly scented and last 2 to 3 weeks with proper care.
Plenty of bright, indirect light is crucial. An east or southeast facing window with filtering is ideal. Too little light will prevent bud formation.
18-28 C during the day, with slight cooling at night to about 15 C. This hybrid tolerates heat well, provided there is sufficient air circulation.
Use an airy orchid mix of medium bark, possibly supplemented with charcoal or coconut chips. Repot every 2-3 years or when the substrate has decomposed too much.
A humidity of 50-70% is ideal. Sufficient air circulation is essential to prevent mold or leaf problems, especially in hot or humid areas.
During active growth (spring to fall), feed weekly with a light dose of orchid fertilizer (- strength). In winter, once a month is sufficient.
Allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings. Give preferably in the morning with demineralized water. Avoid stagnant water in the leaf axils or around the root base.
Flowering usually appears in summer or early fall, depending on the growth cycle. The flowers remain beautiful for about 2 to 3 weeks. Remove the flowering stem only after it has completely withered.
