An enchanting variation on an already rare orchid: Paphiopedilum delenatii ‘vinicolor’ combines the graceful forms of the classic species with a strikingly deeper, wine-red coloration that further underscores its rare status. This variety is particularly prized by collectors for its rich colors, compact growth and elegant inflorescence.

Origin

The original Paphiopedilum delenatii was discovered in the foggy hills of southern Vietnam in the early 20th century. This “vinicolor” form is a selected color variety that probably arose spontaneously within breeding lines, and is notable for the intense dark pink to burgundy color of the petals, a feature not found in all populations.

Characteristics

The leaves are light green on top and show a silvery marble pattern on the underside. The flowers are velvety in texture, with a prominent, wine-red shoe (lip) and dark-tinged petals. This variety usually blooms in winter or early spring with one flower per stem, but in ideal conditions two flowers may also appear.

The plant stays compact and grows slowly, which makes it perfect for windowsills or specialty nurseries.

Care

Light

Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

Temperature

Ideally between 17-24C. This species likes moderate temperatures, with a slight drop at night to stimulate growth and flowering.

Substrate

An aerated mixture based on fine tree bark and possibly some sphagnum moss is desirable. Adequate drainage is crucial for root health.

Humidity

Between 50% and 75% is ideal humidity for this species. A humidifier or water tank nearby can help create a more stable microclimate.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring to fall) weekly a highly diluted orchid fertilizer. In winter, feed only once a month against over-fertilization.

Watering

Water regularly with demineralized water or clean rainwater, but allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid wet feet. At higher humidity combined with lower temperatures, water less frequently and vice versa.

Flowering

This variety blooms once a year, usually in the colder months. After flowering, the plant often rests for several weeks, during which time growth is minimal. During the dormant period, watch out for not overwatering and put a complete stop to nutrition so that it does not accumulate in the plant cells.
