A standout within the Dendrobium-genus: this particular variety combines elegance with rarity. The Dendrobium aphyllum ‘Variegata’ is a deciduous orchid that impresses not only with its blooms, but also with its beautifully variegated foliage.
Dendrobium aphyllum is native to subtropical parts of Asia, such as India, Thailand and southern China. This variegata-form, however, is rare and is grown only in specialized nurseries. The variegated-leaved variety is rarely found in nature and is virtually absent from the mainstream commercial circuit.
The ‘Variegata’ is distinguished by its cream-colored leaf margins that contrast sharply with the deep green center. The plant often loses all its leaves in the winter, then in the spring, dozens of soft, lilac flowers suddenly appear on bare, drooping stems. This inflorescence produces an almost fairy-tale effect. The flowers have a subtle fragrance and usually remain beautiful for one to two weeks.
Lots of bright, indirect light. In the dormant period the plant may also temporarily tolerate some direct sunlight.
During the growth phase between 18 and 28 C. In the winter dormant period, the temperature may drop to 12 C, as long as the plant is kept dry.
Use a well-draining substrate of mainly bark, possibly mixed with sphagnum for extra moisture retention during the growth phase.
A humidity of 55-75% is ideal. It may be temporarily lower during the dormant period.
During the growing period, give diluted orchid feed every two weeks. Stop feeding completely during winter dormancy.
During the growing season, water regularly, but allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. During the dormant period (fall to early spring) keep it almost completely dry. Tap water does not like this species, but demineralized water or room temperature rainwater are very suitable.
After leaf fall in winter, flowers appear directly on the bare stems in spring. Flowering is strongly stimulated by a clear rest period with cool, dry conditions.
