The Paphiopedilum concolor is a striking slipper orchid from Southeast Asia that has been loved by collectors since the 19th century. With its butter-yellow flowers and delicate reddish-brown dots, this species exudes subtlety, but at the same time leaves a lasting impression.

Origin

Paphiopedilum concolor is native to Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, southern China and Vietnam. It often grows there in calcareous forest areas on humus-rich rocks or in shady crevices, usually at low to medium altitudes. The species was first described in 1865 and has been a classic in specialized orchid collections ever since.

Characteristics

The leaves of this species are short, broad and beautifully marbled in gray-green and dark green – a visually appealing feature even outside the flowering period. The flowers are usually pale yellow to cream and covered with fine burgundy dots. They appear solitary or in pairs on short stems and are subtly fragrant. In ideal conditions, the species can flower several times a year.

Care

Light

Paphiopedilum concolor likes bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can damage the leaves. A bright windowsill facing east or west is ideal.

Temperature

This species prefers warm temperatures: 22-28C during the day and not below 16C at night.

Substrate

Use an airy, well-drained substrate based on fine orchid bark, and some sphagnum.

Humidity

A humidity level between 60 and 80% is ideal. For dry air, a humidifier or placing the pot on a water-filled saucer with pebbles will help.

Nutrition

Feed weekly with highly diluted orchid fertilizer during the growing period (spring to fall). In winter, once a month is sufficient.

Watering

Give demineralized water or clean rainwater regularly once the top of the substrate has dried slightly. Make sure the water can drain well and do not leave water in the leaf axils.

Flowering

Flowers usually appear in the spring, but under good conditions they will appear in other seasons as well. They remain beautiful for about 4 to 6 weeks. Because the species can bloom more frequently each year, patience and good care are key to repeated blooms.
