Angraecum leonis is an impressive species from the tropical rainforests of Madagascar and the Comoros. This plant combines broad, leathery leaves with large, ivory-white flowers that emit a strong, sweet fragrance in the evening. The characteristic shape of the flower – star-shaped with a long spur – makes this an archetypal member of the genus Angraecum. A vigorous bloomer and true classic for lovers of fragrant orchids.

Origin

Angraecum leonis grows naturally as an epiphyte in the lowland forests of Madagascar and on the islands of Comoros. In this moist, shady environment, the plant attaches to tree trunks or branches and forms a robust growing base. The species is perfectly adapted to warm temperatures, high humidity and constant evaporation, which also makes it ideally suited to tropical terrariums or warm greenhouses.

Characteristics

The plant grows monopodially and develops firm, succulent leaves that are broad and fleshy – strikingly different from many other Angraecum species.
The inflorescence appears from the leaf axils and usually bears one to two large, star-shaped flowers at a time. The flowers are ivory-white to pure white, waxy and can be up to 7-9 cm wide. The spore is long and curved, indicating pollination by nocturnal butterflies. The fragrance is strong and sweet, especially noticeable in the evening hours.

Care

Light

Bright, indirect light. Tolerates more light than many other Angraecums, but avoid bright afternoon sun. Ideal in a warm greenhouse or windowsill with morning sun.

Temperature

Between 20-28 C during the day, with a slight drop at night. This species likes heat and does not tolerate cold nights below 16 C.

Substrate

Well-draining and aerated. Suitable is a mixture of coarse bark, coconut chips and a small proportion of sphagnum or tree fern fiber. Also suitable for a wooden hanging basket with open structure.

Humidity

65-85%. High humidity is essential, especially in warmer temperatures. Ensure constant air circulation to prevent rot or mold.

Nutrition

Feed weekly during the growing season with diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength). In winter, monthly or only when actively growing.

Watering.

Use only demineralized water or rainwater. Keep the substrate slightly moist, but always allow it to dry briefly between waterings. No wet feet.

Flowering

Flowers usually bloom in fall or early winter. Flowers are fragrant in the evening and last up to 2 weeks. After flowering, the flowering stem is allowed to dry out on its own.
