Exclusive host to the Angus, Judith, and residua underwing moths. Nuts are sought after by wildlife including small mammals, pheasants, turkey, jays, woodpeckers, and black bear. The multitude of insects it hosts makes it attractive to insect eating birds including vireos, chickadees, gnatcatchers, and warblers.

Notes: Fruit is among the largest and sweetest of hickory nuts. Slow growing, can take 40 years to produce nuts. Immature plants dont have shaggy bark. Wood is valued in the timber industry.
