Where other Platyceriums look tough and wild, the Silver Velvet enchants with a velvety appearance. Its leaves are covered with a silver-gray hairiness that gives it a luxurious, almost cuddly appearance – as if the plant were enveloped in a precious cloak of silk.
Like all Platyceriums, Silver Velvet originates in the tropical forests of Asia, Africa and Australia. There, these ferns grow as epiphytes high in trees, where they collect water and organic matter with their shield leaves. The Silver Velvet is a grower-selected variety, loved for its unique leaf texture and the soft, silver sheen that distinguishes it from other forms.
The most striking feature of the Silver Velvet is the velvety texture of its leaves. The fertile leaves fan out gracefully and appear covered in a subtle silver haze that gives off a soft glow in the light. The shield leaves grow sturdy and layered, making the plant increasingly vigorous with age. This combination of elegance and robustness makes the Silver Velvet a true eye-catcher on the wall or on a mounting piece.
Lots of indirect light is ideal. Morning or evening sun is welcome, but protect against bright afternoon sun.
Keep the plant warm, between 18 and 28 C. Temperatures below 12 C are harmful and should be avoided.
The Silver Velvet does well on a wooden board or cork, or in a very airy fern substrate that dries quickly but still retains moisture for a short time.
A humidity of 60-80% is ideal. In drier areas, regular spraying or a humidifier will help.
In the growing period (spring and summer) feed monthly with diluted orchid or fern fertilizer. In winter, feeding can be reduced.
Always use demineralized water. Dip the mounting piece or root zone in water weekly and then drain well. Hot and dry weather may require more frequent watering.
Like other Platyceriums, the Silver Velvet does not bloom decoratively. Its true beauty lies in its soft leaf texture and special silver glow that gives it a luxurious and almost serene appearance.
