The Papilionanda ‘Miss Joaquim’ is not just any orchid – it is an icon. This hybrid was created in 1893 by Agnes Joaquim in Singapore and grew to become a symbol of pride and elegance. In 1981, it was even declared the national flower of Singapore, gaining worldwide fame.
This hybrid originated from a cross between Papilionanthe teres (formerly Vanda teres) and Papilionanthe hookeriana. The cross was created by hand by Agnes Joaquim, making it known as one of the first registered artificial orchid hybrids. The name “Miss Joaquim” was chosen in her honor.

The plant forms long, slender stems that can grow meters high. Flowers appear successively along these stems, often year-round in tropical conditions. The flowers are gracefully shaped with a lavender-pink to purplish color, combined with a contrasting, brightly colored lip. With its rich blooms and ability to continuously form new flowers, it symbolizes vitality and perseverance.
Place the plant in plenty of light and sun, similar to its tropical origins. In a greenhouse or conservatory it does very well, provided there is sufficient ventilation.
This orchid likes warmth. Temperatures between 20 and 32 C are ideal. Protect from cold below 15 C.
Papilionandas are often grown in very coarse substrate or even without substrate, for example in baskets or on a support. The roots need plenty of air circulation.
High humidity (60-80%) is necessary, combined with good air flow.
Fertilize regularly during the growing period with a balanced orchid fertilizer. During intensive flowering, this may be done weekly, but in diluted form.
Always use demineralized water. In hot weather, spray or dip daily so that the roots remain moist but do not suffocate.
What makes the Miss Joaquim unique is its ability to produce flowers almost year-round. In tropical conditions, she blooms continuously, making her an exceptionally reliable bloomer.
