The Paphiopedilum leucochilum “Dark” is a rare and sought-after slipper orchid known for its deep, dark lip color and compact growth habit. This exclusive variety of the species leucochilum displays a striking color intensity that contrasts sharply with its lighter leaf markings, making it a real eye-catcher for any collector.

Origin

This species originates from the calcareous mountainous regions of Thailand, where it grows in sheltered places with high humidity. The “Dark” variety was selected for its exceptional flower color, which can look deeper purple or even almost black, unlike the more common pink or red shades of the species.

Characteristics

Paphiopedilum leucochilum “Dark” forms a compact rosette of marbled leaves with light green and silvery markings. The flower stem usually bears a single flower that is remarkably large relative to the plant. The characteristic “slipper” (the lip of the flower) has a particularly rich, dark color, framed by contrasting spots on the petals. This makes it a real visual treat, especially when it blooms in autumn or winter.

Care

Light

This species likes bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer, to prevent leaf burn.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are between 18 and 25 C during the day. At night it may cool slightly, but avoid temperatures below 15 C.

Substrate

Use an aerated and well-draining substrate suitable for terrestrial orchids, such as a fine orchid bark mix.

Humidity

Humidity between 60% and 80% is ideal. Regular spraying or the use of a humidifier is recommended.

Nutrition

During the growing season, give diluted orchid fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks. During the dormant period, feeding may be reduced or temporarily stopped.

Watering.

Preferably use demineralized water. Allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings.

Flowering

Paphiopedilum leucochilum “Dark” usually blooms once a year with a single flower per stem. Flowering often persists for several weeks. After flowering, the flowering stem dies and the plant will form new growth points for future flowering.
