Habenaria carnea is a sophisticated terrestrial orchid that owes its name to the soft, flesh-colored hues of its flowers. An elegant plant develops from a tuber that bears a spike of delicate flowers during flowering – subtle, but at the same time extremely graceful. The XXL variety produces a larger and stronger tuber, often resulting in more vigorous growth and fuller blooms.
This species is found in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where it grows in moist grasslands and forest edges. As a terrestrial orchid, it develops underground tubers that form new shoots annually and go dormant after flowering.
Narrow, fresh green leaves appear from the tuber and spread at the base of the plant. A slender flower stem then develops, bearing several soft pink to flesh-colored flowers. The flowers have a refined, elegant shape and give the plant a delicate appearance. Thanks to the XXL tuber, more vigor is present, often resulting in richer blooms.
Bright, filtered light is ideal. Avoid bright midday sun, but provide enough light to promote strong flowering.
Moderately warm conditions: 18-28 C during the day, with slight cooling at night.
Use an aerated and moisture-holding mixture. A combination of fine bark, coconut fiber, peat and some perlite works well to retain moisture without getting too wet.
A humidity of 60-75% is desirable, along with good ventilation.
During the active growing period, fertilize lightly weekly with a diluted orchid fertilizer.
Give only demineralized water. Keep the substrate evenly moist during growth. Once the leaves begin to die and the plant enters its dormant period, reduce watering greatly and keep the tuber dry.
The flowering of Habenaria carnea is graceful and refined. The soft pink flowers in subtle hues are reminiscent of delicate flesh-colored petals and appear in airy clusters. With an XXL tuber, the chances of full, rich blooms are even greater, making this orchid a valuable addition for the enthusiast of unusual terrestrial species.
