Goodyera schlechtendaliana ‘Variegata’ is a compact jewel orchid with calm growth and foliage that is especially striking for the contrast between the velvety green and the lighter areas in the markings. This species is terrestrial and makes a creeping base, allowing it to slowly form a neat tussock over time when conditions remain stable.
Goodyera schlechtendaliana is naturally distributed from Tibet to Japan, according to Kew, and also occurs as far away as Sumatra. The species grows primarily in the subtropical biome and is described as a rhizomatous geophyte or lithophyte.
Within that context, an environment with filtered light, constant humidity and an airy, humus-rich substrate best suits the growth form.
The plant stays low and makes rosettes with sturdy leaves. In the form ‘Variegata’ the leaf markings are lighter and more variable, with the degree of variegation varying from plant to plant. This makes each specimen just different in contrast and pattern.
