Clowesia russelliana is an elegant and rare species of the Catasetinae group known for its graceful flower clusters and pleasant fragrance. It forms a fascinating contrast to its robust pseudobulbs: as soon as the flowering time arrives, a cloud of delicate flowers appears that will enchant any collector.

Origin

This species is native to the forests of Mexico and Central America, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. It is closely related to Catasetum and Mormodes, but is distinguished by its airy inflorescence and lovely flower shape. The name russelliana is a tribute to one of the first collectors who brought the species to Europe.

Characteristics

The plant develops hefty pseudobulbs, often with multiple leathery leaves. When dormant, it loses its leaves, but this makes the spectacular blooms all the more impressive: long, gracefully arching flower clusters with dozens of flowers in soft shades of green, cream and pink. Often the flowers emit a pleasant, sweet fragrance.

Care

Light

Lots of bright light is essential. This species tolerates quite a lot of sun and does well in a sunny location, if protected from the hottest afternoon sun.

Temperature

Warm conditions of 20-30 C during the day and 15-20 C at night are ideal.

Substrate

An airy mixture of medium-sized tree bark and charcoal, possibly supplemented with some sphagnum, works well. It thrives best in a pot or basket with good drainage.

Humidity

A humidity of 60-75% is desired, with adequate air circulation.

Nutrition

During the growing period, fertilize liberally weekly with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. As flowering approaches, switch to a phosphorus-rich variety.

Watering

Give only demineralized water. Keep the plant well moist during the growing period, but stop watering completely as soon as the leaves fall off. During the dormant period, the pseudobulbs should remain dry until the new shoots appear.

Flowering

The flowering of Clowesia russelliana is a spectacular highlight. Its long flower clusters, filled with dozens of fragrant flowers, make it one of the most graceful representatives of the Catasetinae. For collectors who like unusual inflorescences and fragrant species, this is an absolute asset.
