A rare gem from the heart of the Amazon, in an award-winning Japanese clone. Cattleya eldorado ‘M.Itoo’ HCC/JOS combines the natural elegance of the species with exceptional flower quality, as recognized with an HCC (Highly Commended Certificate) from the Japanese Orchid Society.

Origin

Cattleya eldorado is a botanical species native to northwestern Brazil, where it grows on tree trunks along the banks of the Rio Negro. The clone ‘M.Itoo’ is named after the Japanese breeder who made this selection famous for its pure colors, symmetry and flowering power.

Characteristics

Flowers

Flowers are light lavender pink to soft lilac with a contrasting, yellow-white throat and sometimes a hint of gold.

Lip

The lip is broad, wavy and shows a prominent white center with yellow and sometimes magenta accents.

Fragrance

Sweet and floral, typical of the classic single-flowered Cattleya species.

Growth habit

Compact and robust with thick, egg-shaped pseudobulbs and leathery leaves.

Flowering time

Usually in summer, with one to two large flowers per bud.

The clone ‘M.Itoo’ is known for its soft pastel shades, perfect shape and good flower life.

Care

Light

Lots of bright, filtered light. An east- or south-facing window with light filtering is ideal. Avoid bright midday sun.

Temperature

Daytime temperatures between 22 and 30C are ideal, with nighttime temperatures around 16-18C. A small temperature difference between day and night promotes flowering.

Substrate

Fine to medium bark substrate, possibly mixed with sphagnum for extra moisture retention. The roots like airiness.

Humidity

Between 60 and 80%, with good ventilation to prevent mold.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings, but never completely dry out. Always use demineralized water or soft rainwater.

Feeding

During the growing season, feed weekly with diluted orchid fertilizer ( strength). During the dormant period (after flowering) reduce or temporarily stop.

Flowering

Blooms once a year, often on new shoots after the dormant period. Flowering is spectacular and fragrant, with flowers that can last 2 to 3 weeks. A short, dry rest in winter promotes bud formation.

Cattleya eldorado ‘M.Itoo’ is a stunning species clone perfect for the collector who loves botanical elegance, soft colors and subtle fragrance. A classic with a sophisticated appearance.
