Begonia metachroa is a compact rhizomatous species native to Central America, particularly found in moist forested regions of Honduras and Nicaragua. It is distinguished by its dark, iridescent leaves with red undersides and bright red petioles. Depending on lighting, the upper surface can display metallic tones that shift between deep green and bronze. The plant typically remains low-growing and bushy, making it suitable for terrariums or confined indoor settings.

This species rarely flowers in cultivation and is mainly grown for its foliage. It reaches an average height of 1020 cm and spreads slowly through rhizomes. Begonia metachroa was first described in 1933 and has since remained a collectors plant due to its unique leaf coloration and form.

Native to: Moist forests of Honduras and Nicaragua, often at mid-elevation

Water: Water when the top third of the substrate has dried; avoid letting the rhizome sit in water

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight to preserve leaf colour and prevent scorching

Humidity: Moderate humidity (around 5060%) is ideal; not required for terrarium culture but benefits from stable indoor humidity
