A compact growing miniature orchid with remarkably vibrant flowers and a distinctly tropical character. Ascocentrum christensonianum is a rare botanical from Vietnam that is rarely offered, but highly prized among connoisseurs for its rich blooms, limited size and suitability for greenhouse, window or terrarium. Ascocentrum christensonianum is a native epiphyte from the humid mountain forests of southern Vietnam, where it grows on tree branches under filtered light and in warm, humid conditions. The species was only relatively recently described and named after American orchid specialist Eric Christenson. Despite taxonomic rearrangements (with Ascocentrum often being placed under Vanda), this species remains considered a distinct botanical entity by enthusiasts.
This species remains extremely compact, with sturdy, upright leaf pairs that form a neat fan shape. The roots are silver-gray and strongly aerial. During flowering, the plant forms a short flower cluster with dozens of small, bright orange to orange-pink flowers that stand out for their color intensity. The flowers are round, waxy and last relatively long. Mature plants often bloom annually or even several times with optimal care.
Bright, indirect light to light morning sun. This species needs slightly more light than average, but direct midday sun is best avoided.
Heat-loving. Ideally between 20-28 C. Can tolerate a slight night chill, but grows slower below 16 C.
Preferably tied up on cork, bark or in a hanging basket without substrate. Possibly with some sphagnum around the roots to prevent drying out. An alternative is coarse bark in a well-ventilated pot.
60-85%. High humidity is important, especially for active root growth. Dry air slows development.
Mist or dip daily in warm weather. In cooler periods, 3-4 times a week is sufficient. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
In the growing season, weekly low dose of orchid fertilizer at 1/4 strength. In the winter or dormant period, feed less frequently.
Blooms often in spring or early summer, but can also bloom at other times if conditions are stable. Flower clusters are short, but very richly filled, making this species a gem in any tropical collection.
