Araucaria chinensis, also known as the Chinese snake pine, is an elegant, slow-growing tree species with symmetrical branching and a robust, upright silhouette. This species is rarely found in cultivation, but makes a unique addition for lovers of botanical peculiarities or exotic woody plants.
Araucaria chinensis is native to southern China, especially in subtropical mountainous regions where the climate is humid and temperate. The species grows at high altitudes, often on rocky slopes or along forest edges. Although the name suggests that it is a separate species, in much modern literature it is used as a synonym of Araucaria cunninghamii var. glauca, or as a local variation within the Araucaria genus.
This conifer is characterized by a columnar to pyramidal growth habit with horizontal branch whorls growing in layers around the main trunk. The needles are firm, narrow and slightly glossy green to gray-green in color. As the plant ages, the branches develop a slightly dependent shape, giving it a graceful appearance. In temperate regions, it remains a compact tree, while in its natural habitat it can grow as tall as 30 meters.
Preferably full sun to semi shade. In a greenhouse or conservatory a lot of light is important for compact growth.
Tolerates slight night cooling, but is not completely winter hardy. Wintering outside can only be done in a sheltered, frost-free spot. Preferably overwinter at 5-10 C in a cold greenhouse or cool room.
Well-draining potting soil, possibly mixed with coarse sand or lava for extra airiness. Avoid prolonged wet feet.
Moderate to high humidity is well tolerated, but drier air is also no problem as long as the roots do not dry out.
Water regularly during the growing season, but allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, water sparingly. Preferably use demineralized water if you have hard tap water.
In spring and summer, feed once a month with a mild fertilizer for woody plants or conifers.
Slow grower. Can be kept in a large pot as well as outdoors (provided winter protection). Formative pruning is possible, but usually not necessary.
