Aerangis calantha is a rare species from the moist mountain forests of central Africa. Despite its compact size, this orchid produces remarkably large, white flowers with long spurs, making it a popular species among collectors. Thanks to its reduced leaf size, it is ideal for cultivation in a terrarium or on a mounting support in a nursery.
This species is native to mountainous rainforests of Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Congo, among others, where it grows on tree trunks at altitudes between 1,200 and 1,800 meters. Conditions in its natural habitat are consistently moist, cool to mildly warm, and rich in filtered light.
The Aerangis calantha forms a small, compact rosette of thick, fleshy leaves that grow up to 8 to 10 cm long. What makes it special are its relatively large flowers that appear almost exaggerated in relation to the plant itself. The flowers are white to cream and have a typical waxy sheen, with a long, straight spur. When flowering, a short cluster of 3 to 7 flowers usually develops. The fragrance is subtle and slightly perceptible especially in the evening.

Can be grown either on a cork block with some sphagnum or in a fine bark mix. Assembly requires consistent watering.

During active growth, feed every 1 to 2 weeks with a highly diluted orchid fertilizer. During cooler months, fertilize less frequently.
Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater. Keep the substrate slightly moist during the growing phase. Allow it to dry out briefly between waterings. At rest, the plant may be slightly drier, but never dry out completely.
Flowering usually appears in fall or early winter. After flowering, remove the flower stem when it has completely dried out. Annual flowering can be expected under good conditions.
