The Bulbophyllum khaoyaiense is a rare and fascinating orchid best known for its compact size and the striking details of its flowers. Although less large and exuberant than some of its relatives, this species has an irresistible appeal to collectors precisely because of its sophistication and special provenance.
Officially described in 2004, this species comes from Thailand, where it was discovered in Khao Yai National Park. The name khaoyaiense refers directly to this site of discovery. It grows there as an epiphyte in moist forests, often on tree branches that are sheltered from direct sunlight but benefit from high humidity and good air circulation.
The flowers of Bulbophyllum khaoyaiense are small but remarkably detailed. They range in colors from yellow to green with reddish-brown spots, giving them a vibrant and almost exotic pattern. The lip is motile – typical of the genus – and contributes to its distinctive appearance. The plant itself remains compact with small pseudobulbs and short, sturdy leaves, taking up little space but still having great ornamental value.
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight as it can damage the delicate leaves and flowers.
This species grows best in warm conditions of 20-28 C. A slight nighttime cool down does not hurt and sometimes stimulates flowering.
Use an airy mixture of fine tree bark and sphagnum. Optionally, the plant can also be grown on cork or in a basket, provided sufficient water and humidity are provided.
A high humidity of 70-85% is desirable. Regular misting or using a humidifier helps to achieve this.
During the growing period, give a light fertilizer application weekly. This way the plant builds up enough energy to produce flowering branches.
Give only demineralized water. Keep the substrate moist, but avoid constantly soaking it.
The flowering of Bulbophyllum khaoyaiense is subtle but unusual. The small flowers often appear in groups and immediately attract attention with their color contrasts and unique details. For collectors, this is a species valued not only for its rarity, but also for the charm it manages to offer in compact form.
