Whereas many Platyceriums look powerful and robust, ‘Jenny’ instead exudes a certain softness and grace – a plant that brings tranquility and elegance to your collection.
Platycerium willinckii is native to the tropical rain forests of Indonesia, where it grows high in the trees as an epiphyte. There it develops its typical shield leaves, which cover the root zone as protective armor while collecting water and organic matter. The selection ‘Jenny’ is popular among collectors for its strikingly elegant leaf shape and airy, almost romantic appearance.
‘Jenny’ has long, narrow fertile leaves that are wavy and gracefully drooping, often with a light gray-green hue. The leaves are less heavy and coarse than in many other Platyceriums, giving the plant a refined silhouette. The shield leaves grow sturdily and layered, anchoring the plant well and forming an impressive base over the years. With its graceful form, the ‘Jenny’ almost looks like a living work of art, exuding softness and lightness.
Place the plant in a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. A little morning or evening sun is well tolerated, but avoid bright midday sun.
The ideal temperature is between 18 and 28 C. Below 12 C, the leaves may suffer damage.
Preferably mount the ‘Jenny’ on wood or cork, or use an airy fern substrate. The roots need plenty of air circulation and should not be in compact substrate.
A humidity of 60-80% is ideal. In drier air, regular spraying or the use of a humidifier helps.
During the growing period (spring and summer) feed monthly with a diluted orchid or fern fertilizer.
Always use demineralized water. Dip the root zone or mounting piece weekly and then drain well. More frequent watering may be required during hot, dry periods.
As with all Platyceriums, the ornamental value of ‘Jenny’ is in its leaf shapes and growth habit, not in decorative flowers. Its elegant leaves are the true eye-catcher.
