Brassavola David Sander ‘Fireworks’ is a primary cross that combines the linear elegance of B. cucullata with the fringed lip and evening scent of Rhyncholaelia digbyana. The selection ‘Fireworks’ is known for its pronounced “stereo explosion” in the lip and remarkably slender segments.

Origin

Registered in 1938, with parents B. cucullata Rl. digbyana. Heritage explains the slender, star-shaped flower and strongly fimbriated, broad lip. The evening and night flower scent is directly inherited from both parents.

Characteristics

Pseudobulbs with firm, narrow leaves form compact clumps that like to receive light and air. Flowers are creamy white to soft green with a prominently fringed lip; the flower structure is open and “spider-like,” allowing ‘Fireworks’ is instantly recognizable at a distance. At dusk, the fragrance becomes most intense. Flowers several times a year under good growing conditions.

Care

Light

Lots of bright, indirect light to slightly filtered sun. Think Cattleya level: a south or west-facing windowsill with filtering works great. If you want shorter internodes and sturdy flower stems, keep the light ample.

Temperature

20-28C during the day, 15-18C at night. A small 24-hour difference helps with bud formation. Protect from cold drafts.

Substrate / support

Excellent for binding on cork or an airy hanging basket; then roots dry quickly and plenty of oxygen remains around the claw. In pot, a very airy mixture of medium-sized pine bark with coconut chips and a small proportion of charcoal or pumice works. Avoid too fine fractions that clog up.

Humidity & air movement.

Aim for 50-70 % with constant, gentle airflow. Stagnant, humid air increases the risk of mold.

Watering

Follow a wet-dry cycle: water generously, then allow to dry almost completely before next watering. In warm, light periods more often; sparingly in winter. Preferably use lukewarm, demineralized water or rainwater. Flushing helps prevent salt build-up.

Feeding

During active growth, weekly weak-on-half (- label dosage). Water alone once a month to “reset” substrate.

Flowering

Blooms often after a period of bright light and steady heat. Buds set best if you stop turning the plant once the sheath fills. Flowers usually open in the evening and smell strongest at night-a characteristic David Sander effect.

Arrangement & form

As a pendant, get the most natural silhouette and quick-drying roots. In pot: choose a narrow, deep pot with ample drainage and repot only when new root tips are visible.

With ample light, plenty of oxygen around the roots and a clear wet-dry rhythm, this Brassavola rewards you with clean lines, evening perfume and a flower shape that will stand out in any collection.
