The Phalaenopsis violacea var. “Sumatra” is a botanical orchid loved by connoisseurs for its compact growth, intensely fragrant flowers and rare provenance. Originally from the rainforests of Sumatra, this variety is distinguished by its deep colors and unique flower shape, which stands out even within the violacea complex.

Origin

This variety of Phalaenopsis violacea is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where it grows in warm, moist lowland forests. Unlike the more common violacea from Malaysia, the Sumatran form often has a somewhat finer leaf texture and a darker, almost velvety flower pattern.

Characteristics

The flowers are small to medium-sized and have a distinctive, star-shaped structure. The color ranges from purplish-red to purple, often with deeper markings in the center. The flowers appear one at a time on a continuous flowering stem, and are intensely sweet-smelling, especially during the day. This fragrance is a distinctive part of its appeal. The plant remains quite compact and, with proper care, regularly produces new flower stalks.

Care

Light

Bright, filtered light without direct midday sun. East- or west-facing windows are ideal.

Temperature

Daytime temperatures between 22 and 28C and nighttime temperatures above 17C. This species likes constant warmth during the day and a slight drop at night to encourage flowering and growth.

Substrate

An aerated, fast-draining substrate based on fine bark and sphagnum moss promotes healthy root growth.

Humidity

Preferably above 60%. Regular misting or the use of a humidifier helps prevent dehydration.

Nutrition

Use a balanced orchid fertilizer in half concentration weekly during the growing period. In winter, once a month is sufficient.

Watering

Water with demineralized water or clean rainwater as soon as the substrate is almost dry, but be sure not to leave the roots wet for long periods of time.

Flowering

The violacea var. “Sumatra” usually blooms several times a year, with one flower at a time on a continuous stem. Do not remove flower stems: they may sprout again and again.
