Blc. King or Taiwan ‘Chang Ju’ is a large-flowered Cattleya hybrid that lives up to its name. With its bold colors, robust construction and full flower form, this is a cultivar that effortlessly attracts attention. Deep purple to burgundy flowers with a velvety lip and striking throat make this a favorite choice among lovers of classic, dramatic Cattleyas.

Origin

This hybrid belongs to the Brassolaeliocattleya group (Blc.), a combination of Brassavola, Laelia and Cattleya. ‘King of Taiwan’ is a well-known cross within Taiwanese breeding, with the clone ‘Chang Ju’ selected for extra large flowers, intense color and good vase life. The plant is especially valued within collecting circles for its exhibition value.

Characteristics

The plant grows sympodially and forms sturdy pseudobulbs with broad, leathery leaves. A mature shoot bears one to three very large flowers of 13 to 15 cm. The flower color is deep magenta to royal purple, with a strongly rippled lip and a prominent throat in golden yellow or white, depending on the clone. The texture is thick and waxy, ensuring long flower life. The fragrance is pleasant and slightly sweet, especially during the day.

Care

Light

Lots of bright, indirect light. Ideally a spot near an east or south window with filtering. Sufficient light is crucial for robust growth and flowering.

Temperature

Between 18 and 28 C. The plant tolerates slight nighttime cooling, but not prolonged cold.

Substrate

An aerated mixture of medium orchid bark, possibly mixed with coconut chips or charcoal. Repot every 2 to 3 years.

Humidity

50-70%, with good air circulation. In dry air, flower development may lag behind.

Nutrition

During the growing period, weekly dilute doses of orchid fertilizer (- strength). In winter, once a month is sufficient.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry thoroughly between waterings. Give preferably in the morning with demineralized water. Avoid stagnant water in the leaf axils or around the roots.

Flowering

Flowers usually bloom once a year in spring or summer. Flowers last about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on temperature and light. Do not remove the flowering stem until it has dried completely.
