With its compact growth and striking leaf markings, this plant is not only rare, but also a stylish statement in any interior. The shades of light green to soft yellow on the dark green leaves give this plant a natural elegance, with each leaf showing its own pattern.
Although the name ‘Monstera minima’ suggests otherwise, botanically this plant belongs to the genus Rhaphidophora. The correct scientific name is Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, but the variegata-variant is more popularly known as Monstera minima variegated. Other nicknames include Mini Monstera variegata, Philodendron Ginny variegated and Split-leaf Philodendron variegated (although the latter is technically incorrect). The plant originated in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand and Malaysia, where it climbs up trees in the wild.
This climbing plant remains smaller than the known Monstera deliciosa and develops indented leaves. The variegation is often seen green-on-green in initial growth. As the leaves age, lighter shades ranging from soft green to yellowish may appear. The markings are always naturally variable and vary from leaf to leaf and plant to plant, giving each plant a distinct look.
Place this plant in a place with lots of bright, indirect light. Variegata-plants need slightly more light than all-green specimens, but direct sunlight can cause the variegated parts to fade or burn.
The ideal temperature is between 17 and 27 C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15 C.
Use an airy, well-drained mixture based on high-quality orchid bark, coconut chips and a small amount of peat moss or perlite. Avoid heavy or compacted potting soil.
A humidity of 60% or higher is ideal. For dry air, a humidifier or regular misting can help.
During the growing season (spring and summer), use a balanced, liquid houseplant food every 2 to 3 weeks. Reduce or stop fertilizing during fall and winter.
Water as soon as the top few inches of the substrate feels dry. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater to prevent tarnish on the variegated leaves.
Flowering is rare in domestic culture. The plant is valued primarily for its leaves. Under ideal conditions, it can produce small, inconspicuous flowers, but this usually occurs only in older specimens.
