Zanthoxylum rhetsa seeds grow into a large tree native to the wet tropical biome of tropical Asia and northern Australia a range extending from the Andaman Islands, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Assam east through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Borneo, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Java, the Lesser Sundas, the Philippines and New Guinea to northern Queensland and the Northern Territory of Australia, and the Solomon Islands. Named from the Malayalam word for this tree (rhetsa in South Indian vernacular). One of the most widely distributed large Zanthoxylum trees in the Asian tropics, producing aromatic fruits used as a culinary spice across South and South-East Asia, particularly in Keralan cooking. Bark and leaves used across its range in traditional medicine. Family Rutaceae.
