Stylochaeton zenkeri

Stylochaeton zenkeri is a very rare aroid native to the wet tropical regions of West and West-Central Africa, including countries such as Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Zare. It is a rhizomatous geophyte, meaning it grows from underground rhizomes, and is typically found in the understorey of humid forests.

This species is indigenous to the wet tropical biomes of West and West-Central Africa, thriving in the shaded understorey of humid forests.

Water:
Maintain consistently moist soil for Stylochaeton zenkeri, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot; therefore, ensure the pot has adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Light:
Provide partial to full shade to mimic the plant’s natural understorey habitat. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may hinder growth. A location away from direct sunlight is ideal.

Humidity:
Stylochaeton zenkeri prefers high humidity levels, ideally above 70%. In the UK, indoor environments often have lower humidity, especially during winter months. To increase humidity, consider using a humidifier, placing the plant on a tray of moist pebbles, or regularly misting the leaves. Its preference for high humidity makes it suitable for terrarium cultivation, provided the plant’s size allows.

Temperature:
This species thrives in temperatures between 18C and 24C. It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 15C, which can cause stress and inhibit growth. Maintain a stable indoor temperature within this range to support healthy development.
