The Cymbidium ‘Vogel’s Magic’ is a cross from the well-known Cymbidium-line, with genetic influences from high-altitude Asian areas such as the Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia. This particular cultivar was developed in Europe, selecting for rich flowering in autumn and winter.
This orchid is characterized by sturdy, upright flower stalks that often bear more than ten flowers. The flowers are medium to large, with a warm mix of old rose, coppery brown and pale green tones. The lip often has deep pink to burgundy markings, providing an elegant contrast to the rest of the flower. The plant itself has long, narrow leaves that grow from graceful fans and form a beautiful base for the flowers.
Cymbidiums like plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight in the summer. A spot near an east or west window is ideal.
During the growing season (spring and summer), this plant tolerates temperatures between 15 and 25C. For good flowering, a cooler period in autumn (around 10C at night) is desirable. If daytime temperatures remain around 12-16C during flowering, flowering can last up to 12 weeks. At higher temperatures, flowering may be shorter.
Use an airy orchid substrate with coarse bark as a base mixed with coir and possibly perlite. The roots need good drainage.
A humidity of 55-70% is optimal. In winter, you can support this with a humidifier or by placing a bowl of water next to the plant.
During the growing season, give diluted orchid nutrition weekly. In fall and winter, this may be reduced to once a month.
Water regularly with demineralized water or clean rainwater as soon as the substrate feels dry. Do not leave water in the pot; this can cause root rot. So always check the bottom of the pot.
Cymbidium ‘Bird’s Magic’ typically blooms in late fall to early winter. Flowers easily last six to eight weeks, but with excellent care, blooms can last 12 weeks. A cooler period of several weeks in the fall is essential to encourage flower stems.
