The Cattleya maxima is one of the classics among South American Cattleyas. With its graceful flower clusters and intensely colored lip, it is a real eye-catcher that has delighted orchid lovers since the 19th century. As its name suggests, it is among the more impressive species, not only in size but also in flowering habit.
Cattleya maxima occurs naturally along the western Andes, particularly in Peru and Ecuador. There it grows as an epiphyte in warm to cool climates, often at high altitudes where there is plenty of light and air circulation. It was described around 1831 and has been considered a favored species in European collections ever since.
The flowers are medium to large and appear in clusters of 4 to sometimes as many as 15 at a time. Their color ranges from soft lilac to deep purple-pink, with a lip that is often intense purple with a yellow center and contrasting veins. Some lines have even been known to have nearly white forms. The plant itself can grow quite large, with long, slender pseudobulbs and narrow leaves that look elegant in proportion.
Plenty of bright, filtered light is essential. A stand with morning and evening sun or a well-lit greenhouse position promotes flowering.
This species feels at home in moderate to warm conditions of 18-28 C. At night, it tolerates slight cooling.
A light mixture of medium to coarse tree bark and charcoal is suitable. It develops sturdy roots and often does well in baskets.
A humidity of 60-80% is desirable, with adequate ventilation to prevent mold.
During the growth phase, fertilize lightly weekly with a balanced fertilizer.
Give only demineralized water. Keep the substrate slightly moist during growth, but allow it to partially dry out between waterings.
The flowering of Cattleya maxima is rich and impressive. With its large clusters of flowers, which often last for weeks, it transforms any collection into a feast of color and elegance. For collectors who love classic varieties with generous blooms, this is one of the most valuable Cattleyas.
