Bl. Yellow Bird is a vibrant and striking hybrid within the Cattleya alliance, famous for its bright yellow flowers, star-shaped blooms and deliciously sweet fragrance. This cross combines the strong characteristics of Brassavola nodosa with the softer elegance of Laelia milleri, resulting in a compact plant with remarkable flowering power.
The name Bl. refers to Brassolaelia, an intergeneric hybrid between Brassavola and Laelia. Bl. Yellow Bird originated from the cross Bl. Richard Mueller B. nodosa. Both parent plants are known for their fragrance and floridity, making this hybrid a reliable, flowering plant – often several times a year when properly cared for.
This orchid grows sympodially and remains fairly compact, with short, ascending pseudobulbs and narrow, stout leaves. In mature specimens, long flowering stems with several star-shaped flowers develop at the top of new shoots. The flowers are bright yellow with a mottled reddish lip and a waxy sheen. The flower color often becomes more intense with lots of light. The fragrance is sweet and citrusy, especially noticeable during the day. A mature plant can flower several times a year, making this species popular with enthusiasts with limited space.
Very light demanding. Give lots of bright, indirect light or several hours of direct morning and evening sun. Under supplemental light, this species also develops well. Light deficiency reduces flowering and leaf color.
Ideally between 18 C and 28 C. The plant likes heat, but also tolerates slight nighttime cooling. Do not expose to temperatures below 15 C.
Use a fast-draining, aerated mix of medium bark with some coconut chips or charcoal if necessary. This species likes an open root environment.
