Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’ is a tall, upright, branching succulent with thick, three-sided stems in a deep reddish-purple, lined with small paired spines and tiny, teardrop-shaped leaves that flush red in bright light. Over time it develops a dramatic, multi-branched candelabra shape that can reach well over a metre indoors. It is fast-growing for a succulent, structurally impressive, and requires very little attention once established.
Origins
Euphorbia trigona is native to West Africa, growing in dry, warm habitats. ‘Rubra’ is a cultivar selected for its deep red-purple stem colour, which intensifies in bright light. Note: the milky white sap (latex) is an irritant. Handle with care and avoid contact with skin and eyes.
