The Dawn Redwood is a majestic conical-shaped tree, distinguished by its deciduous habit in contrast to members of the related sequoia genus of evergreens. It often features attractive deep vertically fissured bark and a trunk that broadens at the base as it matures, developing distinctive ‘armpits’ beneath each branch. Fossilised remnants have been found dating back 225 million years. The tree faces considerable risks of extinction in its wild range of south central China due to deforestation but fortunately has been planted extensively in global arboreta.
