Monstera deliciosa ‘Bulbasaur’ is a newer form of the Swiss cheese plant with a mottled, speckled variegation in lime, yellow and green. Rather than large blocks of white, the colour is scattered in fine flecks across each leaf, which gives it a soft, dappled look. It is still uncommon in cultivation.
Origins Like all deliciosa, it traces back to the forests of southern Mexico and Central America, where the species climbs as a hemiepiphyte. ‘Bulbasaur’ first appeared among seedlings and came into the trade around 2020, then was propagated to keep its speckled colouring going.
How to care for it Bright, indirect light suits it best and helps the flecked variegation stay defined. Water once the top few centimetres of compost have dried, and avoid leaving the roots to sit wet. It likes warmth, humidity above 50 percent and a moss pole to climb, which brings on the larger fenestrated leaves as it matures.
