Tulbaghia simmleri seeds grow into a fragrant society garlic a bulbous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of South Africa, from KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. Described by Beauverd (Gustave Beauverd, 18671942, Swiss botanist at the Conservatoire et Jardin Botaniques of Geneva). Named after a collector or patron named Simmler. Produces strap-like, grass-like leaves and tall, sturdy scapes bearing umbels of fragrant pink-lilac to deep pink flowers with a distinctive corona among the most fragrant species in the genus. All Tulbaghia parts emit a garlic-like odour when crushed (from allyl sulphide compounds), giving rise to the common name ‘society garlic’. The genus Tulbaghia was named by Linnaeus after Ryk Tulbagh (16991771), Dutch Governor of the Cape Colony and a keen natural history enthusiast. ~2025 species, all from Africa. Family Amaryllidaceae, subfamily Allioideae.
