Zantedeschia odorata SEEDS

Zantedeschia odorata seeds grow into the fragrant calla lily a tuberous geophyte endemic to a very restricted area of the subtropical biome of the Western Cape of South Africa, confined to the Breede River valley and adjacent areas. Described by P.L. Perry (1994). The only wild Zantedeschia species with a distinct, sweet fragrance the epithet odorata means ‘fragrant’ or ‘scented’. This extraordinary character of scent, absent in all other Zantedeschia species, makes it uniquely valuable in horticulture and breeding programmes. A semi-aquatic species growing along riverbanks and in seasonal wetlands. Rare and restricted, with a very limited natural distribution. Contains calcium oxalate. The genus Zantedeschia was named by Sprengel (1826) in honour of Giovanni Zantedeschi (ca. 17731846). Family Araceae.

Full sun to partial shade; moist to wet soils or shallow water; subtropical Mediterranean Cape conditions of the Breede River valley. The only fragrant wild calla lily species.
