Originally described by Linnaeus (1753) as Calla aethiopica; transferred to the genus Zantedeschia by Sprengel (1826) the genus named in honour of Giovanni Zantedeschi (ca. 17731846), Italian priest and botanist. ‘Highveld’ indicates a provenance or selection from the South African Highveld (the high interior plateau). One of the world’s most iconic and widely known flowers, grown commercially as a cut flower and used in countless ornamental, medicinal and cultural contexts globally.
