Diplarrena moraea seeds grow into the white iris or butterfly flag a rhizomatous perennial endemic to the temperate biome of south-eastern Australia, occurring in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania in heathland and forest habitats. Described by Labillardire (Jacques Labillardire, 17551834, French botanist who was the first professional botanist to collect in Australia) in his account of the voyage searching for the lost explorer La Prouse (Relation du Voyage la Recherche de la Prouse, 1800). The genus name Diplarrena derives from the Greek diploos (double) + arren (male) referring to the remarkable fact that plants in this genus have only two functional stamens, whereas all other Iridaceae have three. This makes Diplarrena one of the most botanically anomalous members of the iris family; the genus contains only two species. Note: the genus name is often misspelled Diplarrhena, an error that originated in Bentham’s Flora Australiensis (1873). Produces iris-like white flowers with yellow and purple markings. Synonym: Moraea diandra Vahl (nom. illeg.). Family Iridaceae.

Full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soils; cool temperate Australian conditions; cold-hardy. A beautiful and unusual Australian native for cool temperate gardens.
