Beaucarnea compacta seeds grow into a compact, geophytic Beaucarnea endemic to the state of Guanajuato, Mexico one of the most range-restricted species in the genus. Unlike the arborescent ponytail palms, B. compacta has a predominantly subterranean or at-ground-level swollen caudex, from which a cluster of long, narrow leaves emerges. This compact, low-growing form makes it quite distinct from the taller tree species and particularly well-suited to container cultivation. It grows in the desert and dry shrubland biome of central Mexico.
