The epithet chilopsidis means ‘resembling Chilopsis’ (desert willow, family Bignoniaceae), referring to some similarity in leaf form or habit to that desert tree. A member of the large and diverse Ipomoea genus of morning glories, with the characteristic funnel-shaped flowers of its genus; native to the seasonally dry tropical and subtropical zones of Mesoamerica.
